John Jordan

John Jordan was a sett maker at the Titterstone Quarry (photo). He was also a member of the Oddfellows, a welfare society which predated national insurance and union movement (photo of regalia?). Workers would pay into a fund which supported families in times of illness or in the event of death. They met at the Institute building just up the hill from St John’s.

The family home was on Cleobury Road Doddington

John served in the First World War as a sapper. Sappers were engineers responsible for digging trenches and earthworks. They were often recruited from mining and quarrying communities because of their skill and familiarity with hard physical work.
