Creative responses
The project has been lucky enough to work with a range of artists to draw out creative responses.
Artist Suzanne Thomas brought out people’s creative side in a walk with words. This was a walk with a difference as the walkers created a collaborative poem which was then carved into new stones in the church repair.
St Mary’s Youth Project and Cleobury Mortimer Men’s Shed came together to make new bird boxes from recycled timber from the pews. These have been installed in the churchyard and already have occupants!
The hills have such a rich history and so much rests in people’s homes and in their memories. We asked ‘What is your Clee hills story?’ and invited people to share their stories and photos at our History United event. The results were amazing. From a tiny pair of Victorian child’s shoes to touching stories of how relatives have overcome some tough conditions to carve a life on the hill. Locals helped identify faces, places and events in our growing community archive as well adding to the memory map of the area.
Photographer Tom Blockley has been working with students from Ludlow College to capture some amazing images of the hill. Tom shared some professional tips on making great images as we explored the hill with cameras. The best of these images can be seen on this site and within the displays in St John’s. We have also been fortunate enough to have two of the Graphics students work on the displays and leaflets. Their work has been so professional and St John’s is so pleased to offer them real live projects to work on through Beacon on the Hill.
