A new community resource at St John’s Doddington
The Clee hills have such a rich history and so much rests in people’s homes and in their memories.
The Beacon on the Hill team at St John’s Doddington invited people to share their stories and photos. The results were amazing. From a tiny pair of Victorian child’s shoes to touching stories of how relatives have overcome some tough conditions to carve a life on the hill. Locals helped identify faces, places and events in our growing community archive as well adding to the memory map of the area. If you have any old photos of people, places or events on the hill, the team would love to see them. Get in touch with Jim or Celia stjohnsdoddington@gmail.com
The project also organised a walk through Titterstone Clee Hill’s industrial history led by Alf Jenkins MBE. This fascinating route takes in the quarries at Titterstone summit, Craven Place and the modern workings as well as a railway, two inclines and a coal mine. The walk will be published later in the year so that everyone can explore this unique landscape.
On 14th September Rev Mark Daborn will be leading a walk between four Clee Hill churches as part of Heritage Open Days and Ride and Stride. Everyone is invited to join the walk either in part or the whole 10 miles. For those looking for a more creative experience, the project has also organised a felting workshop with local artist Iris Todd. On Saturday 28th September you can come along to try your hand at wet felting techniques and contribute to a new textile piece which will be on display at the church.
